As a USCG Licensed Captain with over 28,000 nautical miles of experience, Deb has an intimate knowledge of the Windward Islands, having spent over two years sailing these waters. Additionally, Deb’s unique training as a Certified Life Coach allows her to not only teach sailing techniques but also to mentor you in building confidence, overcoming challenges, and navigating both the waters and your life’s goals.

What You Will Learn

This retreat is designed to equip you with the essential sailing and cruising skills needed to navigate the seas and live aboard a boat comfortably. Captain Deb will introduce you to everything from the basics of sailing to more advanced techniques, preparing you for your own adventures on the water.

  • Routing and Navigation: Learn how to plan and execute a successful sailing route, understanding how to use charts and chart plotters, and how to identify your position using coordinates and compass readings.
  • Line Handling and Sail Management: Master the ropes! Understand how to control the sails and lines, and handle the boat in various conditions.
  • VHF and Communication: Get familiar with the vital communication tools used on the water to stay connected and informed.
  • Boat Systems: Learn how the boat works, including electrical, water, black water (waste management), fuel, air conditioning, refrigeration, and more. Understand the systems that keep you comfortable and safe while at sea.
  • Weather and Routing: Learn how to interpret weather data and make routing decisions based on weather conditions, ensuring safe and efficient passage.
  • Safety and Emergency Procedures: Understand the importance of onboard safety, from life jackets to ditch bags, and learn the protocols for handling emergencies.
  • Dinghy and Mooring Operations: Practice using a dinghy for transportation and how to securely tie off on a mooring ball. Understand the basics of anchoring and docking, and learn how to handle lines at the dock.
